Currently a Senior Instructor for American Survival Guide University, EJ “Skullcrusher” Snyder is an extreme survivalist, adventurer, survival instructor, survival TV host, retired 25-year Army combat vet, motivational speaker and writer.
He was born and raised in one of northern New Jersey’s tough Italian neighborhoods. He always loved sports and dedicated a lot of time to the art of fighting. Bullied as a kid, Snyder found solace in the great outdoors looking to escape the concrete jungle. His father encouraged this further by taking Snyder on weekend outdoor trips hunting, fishing, trapping, camping and hiking. He took on jobs later on as a camp counselor, nature/archery instructor and life guard and enjoyed rafting, canoeing, rock climbing and other water activities.
At 19, Snyder he joined the U.S. Army as an infantryman and paratrooper and was exposed to his first level of formal survival training while attending Ranger School. While serving as a Ranger instructor, he became the primary survival and tracking instructor for Florida’s Ranger Camp. He then attended the SERE course (Army Survival School) and Nature and Vision Tracking School.
Survival became Snyder’s passion: He took on self-study to become the best all-around survivalist he could by focusing on his military survival skills and primitive, self-reliance, off-the-grid and self-defense skills.
Once he retired from the Army, he was hired as a government contract survival instructor teaching future Green Berets and other soldiers survival techniques at the Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina for six years.
Snyder has accumulated more than 40 years of outdoor experience, 25 years of survival experience (10 as a formal instructor) and 25 years of military experience (including two years in combat during the 1991 Gulf War and OIF).
He has also lent his services as a survival and military expert for TV as a technical adviser and commentator to many TV/film/commercial projects. Snyder also did some acting and stunt work for other projects. He is most known for his three appearances on the Emmy-nominated Discovery Channel survival series, Naked and Afraid, appearing in season one (Tanzania) and season two (Amazon) and XL (Colombia). He also appeared in TNT’s 72 Hours: The Fijian Jungle.
Best known for his toughness, tenacity, iron will and heart, he always handles the situation he faces with uncanny calm and a ferocious roar (as needed).
Snyder works hard to motivate others through his website, YouTube and social media links, as well as his motivational speaking and many appearances and writing endeavors. He dedicates a lot of time to many charities and causes that are mostly focused on children, veterans, soldiers and those battling terminal illnesses. He volunteers with the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA and scouting programs.
Snyder is 50 years old and currently resides in North Carolina.
